Star Wars is a wonderful film, full of fantastic settings and characters. It's a film that has served as the entry point to science fiction. George Lucas' legendary film was a absolute explosion in the history of film, and holds up well today.  While the effects are what everyone mentions first, it's the performances of Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing,  Carrie Fisher, and a bevy of voice actors that create the characters that have spawned huge amounts of further work. Why it's on the list Because without it, there's no need for a list of great science fiction films! It might not be the finest science fiction film ever made, but it changed everything.
